Meteor Gardens

Hey everyone! I am going to talk about something that I never thought I would talk about…a Chinese drama. You read that right, CHINESE, not Korean. What drama has finally managed to drag me away from Korean dramas? Well that, my friends, would be Meteor Gardens. You have probably heard of it, but in case you have been living under drama-free rock, I will now proceed to tell you all about it.

You may have heard of a little-known drama from 2009 called Boys Over Flowers. (That was sarcasm, you can’t love Kdramas and NOT at least know about this drama).

Who could forget Lee Min Ho with ridiculous ringlets? Or the hilarity of deciding that a kick to the head translates to true love? What about Guem Jandi, the “professional-level” swimmer who drowns like three times? It is nothing if not a memorable drama. I personally, did not like it. It was addicting. I watched every episode except one in the middle. But still. I spent a good majority of the time pissed off.

Back to the point, Meteor Gardens is based off of the same Japanese manga that Boys Over Flowers was based on. Which is why I was low-key shocked when I actually started liking this drama.

It is probably is sacrilege to say this…but the boys in Meteor Gardens are just so much cuter.

Especially the second lead. He gives me serious Park Bo Gum vibes.

He even looks cute upside down!

But aside from the seriously cute boys, the story is still very addicting. And I guess this drama is longer, or maybe it is because the second lead is hotter, but I totally understand the main girls decisions so much better this time around. Also, there just seems to be less corniness, in general.

From what I can tell on mydramalist.com, all the actors are still pretty new, but I think they are doing a great job. But I am never a good judge about acting, I think everyone who acts does a great job. I am not fond of the Chinese language like I am with Korean. In fact, I find myself translating into Korean a lot of the time. And Chinese dramas dub their dramas. I looked up why they do this, as far as I can tell, it is basically because everybody’s accent is so different that you wouldn’t be able to understand otherwise. *rolls eyes* It reminds me of the 30s when they were doing talkies, but dubbing the voices because certain popular actors/actresses from the silent screen had horrible accents. My sister quit the show because she couldn’t handle the dubbing not matching the lip movement on screen. If that sort of thing bothers you, be warned. It doesn’t really bother me in this instance because it’s in a language I have no desire to learn.

So, enough beating around the bush, what exactly is this story about? It is the story of Shancia an ordinary girl who attracts the attention of an extraordinary guy. Doaming Si is the leader of a group of 4 particularly hot, talented, and rich guys. But he has a serious personality problem and doesn’t really know how to communicate to other ordinary humans. Shancia doesn’t put up with his superior attitude, and he just falls head over heals for this girl who stands up to him. Although they never stop bickering for more than fifteen minutes of the show, there is no denying the simmering chemistry between them. But can two people from two such different worlds really make it work? Watch the show to find out.

Where can you watch this show? Netflix. As of right now, as I type this, I think it is still currently airing but it is on it’s very last leg, so go ahead and start watching it now. If you liked Boys Over Flowers, you will like this. If you didn’t like BOF, you might still like this.

If you are like the me of a few weeks ago who won’t give Chinese dramas a try, then I will recommend a few Korean dramas I have been watching. My ID is Gangnam Beauty is definitely my favorite of all the dramas I am watching, Korean or Chinese. But alas, I am all caught up, and it airs on Fridays and Saturdays, so I have another day to go before I can watch it. The summary doesn’t really do it justice, it is about a girl who gets plastic surgery because she is bullied so much for being “ugly”, but things aren’t necessarily better on the other side of the coin. What this show is really about is self-love and acceptance. It touches on sensitive subjects like bullying, plastic surgery, and sexism.

I also have been enjoying 30 but 17. It is a cute, fluffy drama. Slooooooooow burn. Like the plot moves at the pace of molasses in the winter. But it is full of cute stuff, which I love. If you are just looking for a cutesy drama to chill with, that would be the one to go with. There are nine episodes out so far, and it airs on Mondays and Tuesdays, so it can at least perk up your Monday. I am watching both of these on Dramafever. I haven’t been using Viki much these days. Everything is locked to me even though I bought a pass. But I didn’t buy the extra special pass, so I still have to wait for things. UGH.

You guys watching anything good? Have you tried these dramas? What do you think?

This one’s on my list. I watched the original Chinese Meteor Garden that’s super dated now, but still, in my opinion, the best version of the story (having also watched the Korean and Japanese versions). I’m glad it seems to be a good show so far!

I never watched Meteor Garden but I have watched Boys Over Flowers and Hana Hori Dango, the Japanese adaptation, and I prefer BOF, Lee Min-Ho is top +.+.
It’s hilarious how Jan Di can almost drown so many timesxD being what she does.
Ps: I love Legend of the Blue Sea! Have you seen it? (Lee Min-ho is main character).

    1. I haven’t seen legend of the blue sea. I’m not a huge fan of lee min ho. My favorite one of his dramas was city hunter.
